Step 2 of Build the Foundation 1st!
· Step 2: "Build the Foundation"-BE MOTIVATED TO LEARN
There are many ways we learn new materials, I will touch on the ones that have proven to be sure-fire winners.
Natural born learners and others need to be motivated to learn the processes of success. You are all driven by different reasons to "be the best", "reach the top of mountain" or be an unqualified success. I am not here to endorse any one of these, but to help you pull from deep inside your desire to just be your very best.
Let's begin by discussing the three different approaches to learning. Task orientated, ego-orientated and those that focused on work avoidance.
Those of you who are task oriented, whose goal is learning for its own sake, are more likely to value and use deep-processing strategies; for example, to try to integrate new information with what you already know.
Individuals who are ego oriented, whose goal is primarily to demonstrate that they perform better than others, are more likely to value and use surface-level strategies, for example, to memorize new formulas just before a test.
Others out there who are focused on work avoidance are not likely to value or use either deep-processing or surface-level strategies.
Although most people believe that deep-processing strategies are more effective than surface-level strategies, they are not likely to use the former unless they value learning for its own sake and are interested in doing their best regardless of the performance of others.
Outside influences play a major role over individual's reasons for learning, it is important to understand "the potential effects of these reasons on your learning behaviors." I suggest that everyone should be encouraged to learn for the sake of learning; that is, to learn for understanding and meaningfulness, and to not place such great importance on competition and recognition in the business and personal arenas. This process of learning for understanding will be more beneficial for as you climb the ladder of success since you will be UNDERSTANDING what you have learned, not just learning about the subject to "hold your own" in a crowd.
Natural learning is based on curiosity and projects where participants share knowledge to reach a goal. Knowledge that is useful for a project is customized to the project needs and personality of the participants. Knowledge is gained by tapping information sources through research, trial and error, networking, and intuitive forces. The ability to tap these resources and make sound judgments is the key to achieving your desired goal. As one goal is achieved, another is established. Each goal requires new knowledge and skills, and this is achieved through the ability to acquire knowledge from a variety of sources.
Learning can be accomplished in several other ways too, such as learning through repetition, observation and last but not least motivation.
Repetition Builds Recognition
Ever wonder to yourself why McDonald's and McDonald's brand names seem to be everywhere you turn? The answer is very simple; this is a tired and true method of advertising called Repetition. The more times you see a product advertisement, the more an association is built in you and it becomes ingrained into your subconscious mind. That is why you reach for the Coke "quenching your thirst" with Coke due to the massive repetitions your mind has been subjected to on a daily, monthly and yearly basis. This same method can be used for learning too. Rote learning has been a staple in the learning field from the beginning of time. Constant studying of the same information over and over seeps that knowledge deep inside your mind so that when it is needed it is automatically available for your use. The more repetitions you see of information the more impressions are burned into your subconscious mind. If you desire to learn about great Motivational passages, study and learn them over and over again until they become second nature to you.
Use observation as a tool for learning
Learning from other people's experience can help you achieve more in your life even faster by cutting your life's learning curve in half and also sparing you a lot of unnecessary heartache and self-doubt. I am sure you heard some of the most successful people in your line of business say, "I wouldn't be here today, if it wasn't for the people who had gone before me?" Now you ask yourself, do you really think you have to repeat the mistakes that others have made in order to succeed? Absolutely no, that's unnecessary. But society as a whole would have you believe it's the best way to learn. I believe if you're going to make a mistake, try to make it something new. You do not have to reinvent the wheel every time. Follow in the footsteps of those that went before and save the time and energy to improve the process!
Motivation is integral part of learning
The more you are aware of your thinking processes as you learn, the more you can control such matters as goals, dispositions, and attention. Self-awareness promotes self-regulation. If you are aware of how committed (or uncommitted) you are to reaching goals, of how strong (or weak) your disposition is to persist, and of how focused (or wandering) is your attention to a thinking or writing task, you can regulate your commitment, disposition, and attention to that subject.
"Leadership is constantly changing, and survivors learn to change with it."
"Yesterday, natural resources defined power. Today, knowledge is power. Yesterday, leaders commanded and controlled. Today, leaders empower and coach. Yesterday, leaders were warriors. Today, they are facilitators. Yesterday, managers directed. Today, managers delegate. Yesterday, supervisors flourished. Today, supervisors vanish."
-- Dr. Denis Waitley, The Toastmaster, December 2000.
"Give a person an idea, and you enrich their life. Teach a person how to learn, and they can enrich their own lives" - Author Unknown
When you base your goals on personal achievement with a burning desire, self-discipline and persistence, you "it is the pursuit of achievement first" elements that cost nothing to acquire. The money will come with knowledge and determination to succeed. You must first strive toward achievement with resources available to you at that time, learning to move ahead with what you have, however limited that may be. In other words, just do it and believe yourself!
To start, you need a vision of the person you want to be.
Seven Successful Rules of Motivation:
1. Set a major goal, but follow a path. Each path has several offshoots that go in many directions. When you learn to succeed at these offshoots, you will be motivated to challenge your grand goals.
2. Always finish what you start. A half finished project is of no use to you. Quitting is a habit. Break the habit and see your successes multiply. Develop the habit of finishing your self-motivated projects. The results will astound and inspire you to achieve your desired outcomes.
3. Socialize with others on the same path. Mutual support is an enormous motivating factor. You will develop the attitudes of your closest companions. If they are lost, you to will be. If they are on course, you will be too. To be a Millionaire, you must associate with people who have Millionaire attitudes!
4. Learn how to learn. Dependency on others for knowledge is a slow time consuming processes. You have the ability to learn without tutors. In fact, when you learn the art of self-education you will find, if not create, opportunities to live successes beyond our wildest dreams. Belief in yourself is one of the strongest of all motivators.
5. Tune in to your natural abilities with an interest that motivates you. Natural abilities create motivation, motivation creates persistence and persistence gets your goals accomplished. Whatever you can conceive and believe you can achieve!
6. Ramp-up your knowledge of subjects that inspire you. The more you know about a subject, the more you want to learn about it. A self-propelled upward spiral develops with success at the Apex.
7. Don't be afraid to take risks. Failure and bouncing back after a disappointment even stronger than before are elements of motivation. Failure is a learning tool. No one has ever succeeded at anything worthwhile without some sort of failure. If you learn from your failures, they are not failures at all but a true learning experience.
Learning to Make Quality Decisions
You need to find the correct path. With each step you take, you will learn how to complete small projects and tasks. At the end, you will collect all the small accomplishments and combine them into a successful achievement. You will meet and exceed your goals.
By knowing what path you are on, you can make quality decisions that will guide you to your ultimate positive outcome. Others with more knowledge on a subject can help you if they know what your goal is. Be clear about your goals, write them down and redefine them as you progress on the path of success. Always bearing in mind that you can take divergent paths and still realize the same outcome you desire. Be flexible but vigilant to stay the course.
You need to learn how to prevent potential problems. Problems are caused by a lack of knowledge, not bad luck. Problems destroy dreams, not money. Keep your problems to a minimum by studying your goals outcomes everyday. Read them aloud twice a day, once in the morning and before retiring for the evening. Remember, your subconscious mind does not sleep so always feed it clear, clean positive thoughts before going to bed. In this way your mind will continue to work out the details for your ultimate victories and successful outcomes of your dreams.
As a leader in your field, you will need to know how to bring the best out of people. No one knows what their true potential is until an opportunity presents itself. Be a positive influence, inspire other people to reach their dreams and goals. As the great motivator, Zig Ziglar, once said, help enough people get what they want out of life and you too will get what you want.
The rewards of success are money, power, and influence. These rewards are well deserved after learning to believe and succeed. However, their uses are not to be taken lightly. Misuse of any of the three will lead to a heavy burden to bear. Use them wisely for the benefit of everyone. In the hands of a true leader many good outcomes can be realized personally and professionally.
The lie that has had the greatest impact on my life, was the lie that "Experience is the best teacher." You're probably saying to yourself, "What are you talking about, experience is the best teacher." Well I beg to differ, and I hope this gives you some food for thought.
First of all, experience is not the "best" teacher. It's a "good" teacher, but not the best. A better teacher is "other people's experiences." I call this the "Been There, Done That" Principle. As a matter of fact, I believe that you should only learn from your own experiences if it's the "only" teacher available. But most of the time, it's not.
Your "perfect property" is waiting for you. Stay Motivated to learn all you can about your chosen goal and reach for the Top, never, never quit! It's all their for the asking!
Live the Principle of Abundance; there is enough for everyone and you deserve your share!
Until next time Best Wishes and Continued Success!
